workplace safety
According to the Occupational Safety & Health Association (OSHA), 70,000-80,000 workplaces experience a serious fire each year. About 200 employees per year die in these fires and another 5000 are injured. Property losses from workplace fires exceed $2 billion annually. 85% of workplace fires are caused by factors related to human behavior rather than catastrophic industrial equipment failure.
Taking simple precautions and having a fire prevention plan in place can help keep you, your coworkers and the building you work in safe from fire. Some important steps you can take to prevent fires at work include:
- Minimize the use of extension cords and power strips. Extension cords are meant for temporary use only. Extension cord and outlet strip misuse is the most common cause of office fires!
- Maintain all heating, electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Do not overload electrical systems.
- Use and store cleaning supplies safely; keep combustibles away from sources of extreme heat or cold.
- Have a fire prevention plan you review with your coworkers on a regular basis, and an evacuation plan in case of an emergency.
- Do not burn candles unattended in the workplace.
