holiday safety
What would the winter holidays be without Christmas trees, decorations, festive light displays and a roaring fire in the fireplace? Unfortunately, the very items that make our holidays feel special and festive can also cause injuries, death or property damage if not used properly.
While tragic, it’s not exactly surprising that the holiday season is prime time for home fires. There are more home fires in December and January than any other months of the year; these two months alone account for nearly 25% of fires in the home. Four out of the five days with the highest reported incidences of home fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. (The fifth day is Halloween.)
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) outlines in its “Holiday Decoration Safety Tips” brochure how to have beautiful and safe holidays. It includes safety tips covering the proper installation and maintenance of trees and decorations, lights, candles and fireplaces.
